Public Storage Prohibited Items – What Not to Put in a Storage Unit

We understand that when it comes to owning a storage unit, it’s tempting to put everything into it, everything you don’t want in your house, things you want to put out of mind, at least for a while. However, not everything can be put into public storage – there are a few prohibited items you should know about. Here are some items that should never go in storage.
Food
Storing perishable items, like food, threatens the safety of the other things in your storage unit, as well as the safety of the entire public storage facility. Food and pet food, even canned goods, will eventually go bad and start to rot, attracting mold, pests, and rodents. These vermin will either start chewing away at your remaining things or nest, causing further damage. Soon, the entire warehouse could fall to infestation.
Plants
If you are in the process of moving houses, you’ll likely want a place to temporarily store your house plants. A storage unit is not that place. Plants need regular light, water, and fresh air to grow and survive, conditions not found in a storage facility. Your plants will wither and die quicker than you may think, and dead plants rot and attract the same bacteria and vermin food does.
Hazardous Materials
Anything made up of combustible, flammable or toxic materials are strictly forbidden from going in public storage for obvious reasons. That includes:
- Compressed gas and propane tanks
- Motor oil
- Acid
- Paint
- Fertilizers
- Hazardous, toxic, and biological waste
- Asbestos
- Fireworks and explosives
